This book has grown out of my research and teaching on first language acquisition, where, over the years, I have expanded the range of topics to cover something approaching what small children have to tackle as they take on the learning of a first language, together with the many steps they then take on the way to becoming skilled speakers. This book has also evolved over the years in light of repeated discussions with colleagues and students on what we can – and can’t – assume about the process of acquisition, and what each assumption buys – or fails to buy us – theoretically.en_US
